Supreme Court issues notice on plea challenging Election Commission's power to remove/reduce disqualification period of MPs/MLAs

The petition filed by NGO Lok Prahari also challenged the period of disqualification provided under Sections 8 and 9 of the Representation of the People Act.

The Supreme Court Friday sought the response of the Central Government and the Election Commission (EC) on a public interest litigation (PIL) petition challenging the validity of EC's power to remove/reduce disqualification period of convicted law makers under Section 11 of the Representation of the People Act [Lok Prahari Vs. Union of India and Anr.]
