Madras HC judge, M Sundar receives anonymous threat over MLA Disqualification Verdict

Reports have surfaced that an anonymous letter has been sent to Justice M Sundar of the Madras High Court, threatening him of dire consequences in view of his ruling in the Tamil Nadu MLA disqualification case..Last month, Justice M Sundar had differed from the view taken by Chief Justice Indira Banerjee, when he concluded that the disqualification of 18 AIADMK MLAs for having expressed withdrawal of support for incumbent Chief Minister, E Palaniswamy, was liable to be set aside..Reports suggest that the letter, written in Tamil, has raised objection to Justice Sundar’s ruling against the incumbent government. Further, it warns Justice Sundar of dire consequences for him and his family..In view of the threat, Chief Justice Banerjee reportedly spoke to the Commissioner of Police, AK Viswanathan, and arranged additional protection for Justice Sundar and his family..The verdict in MLA disqualification case has significant ramifications as far as Tamil Nadu politics is concerned. The case is also tied to other inimically related cases, which include the plea for a floor test on the Assembly Floor. Effectively, the ruling in the case could potentially make or break the current AIADMK-lead regime in the state..The split verdict passed last month meant the extension of political limbo of sorts. The case currently rests before Justice M Sathyanarayanan, who was designated by the Supreme Court to ultimately decide the case. Justice Sathyanarayanan is due to hear the case on a continuous basis from July 23 to July 27.
