"One of the most enlightened souls": Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on CJI DY Chandrachud

Vice President (VP) of India and Senior Advocate, Jagdeep Dhankhar on Saturday heaped praise on the Indian judiciary and in particular, current Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud..The Vice President stated that the courts in India are most sensitive to the problems of a common person and the judiciary is headed by a talented luminary."Where do you have a judiciary as involved as in India? We have, at the moment, one of the most enlightened souls as the Chief Justice of India. A man who brings on the table huge experience, commitment, passion, mission. Enormously talented. But look at the orders. It takes him no time to grant relief to an ordinary man," he said.He stressed that the Indian judiciary is a strong one with unparalleled reach."In India we have a ecosystem now. You may be just anybody, you are accountable to law. No one is beyond the reach of law and no one can be treated unfairly because we have a robust judicial system. And at the moment, the judicial system is headed by a man who is spinally, morally and propriety-wise well deserving of it.".It takes him no time to grant relief to an ordinary man.Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on CJI DY Chandrachud .The Vice President was addressing members of the Indian diaspora in London. Interestingly, Dhankhar was in the news recently over his criticism of the basic structure doctrine and the top court's striking down of the National Judicial Appointments Commission Act in 2015. Earlier this year, he had said,"These institutions must know how to conduct themselves. There can be deliberations. But using these platforms for public consumption...I became very surprised when the judges of the honourable court asked the Attorney General to give message to high constitutional authority." The CJI had responded to some of this, stating that the basic structure doctrine is like a north star guiding those on the bench.Watch the Vice President's speech below.
