Punjab & Haryana High Court to get 6 Additional Judges from the Bar

Pallavi Saluja

The Punjab and Haryana High Court will soon get six additional judges from the Bar. The six lawyers who have been recommended for elevation are:

  1. Arvind Singh Sangawan
  2. Rajbir Sehrawat (former Haryana senior deputy advocate general)
  3. Anil Kshetrapal (Senior Advocate)
  4. Avneesh Jhingan
  5. Mahabir Singh Sindhu (former Punjab additional advocate general)
  6. Sudhir Mittal (Retd. Major)

Out of the six, five are from the Haryana Bar, and only Avneesh Jhingan is from the Punjab Bar.

The Prime Minister’s Office has given its approval to the proposal of the Department of Justice to appoint these advocates as additional judges. All that remains is for the President to sign off on the six names.

However, Rajbir Sehrawat’s appointment will be notified only after his brother – who is practicing in Punjab and Haryana High Court – gives an undertaking that he will not practice in the court for the next two years.

Recently, Raj Shekhar Attri and Gurvinder Singh Gill were appointed as Additional Judges of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

As per the latest Department of Justice numbers, the High Court has a total of 48 judges, 4 of whom are additional judges. The number of vacancies stand at 37, and will increase when three judges – Justices M Jeyapaul, Sneh Prashar and Darshan Singh – retire this month.
