The Kerala police have arrested a man in connection with the suicide of former government pleader PG Manu..Manu was found dead on April 13 after being accused of rape while out on bail in a different rape case..The man who has been arrested, Johnson Joy, is the husband of the woman whom Manu allegedly raped while out on bail. Joy was a former client of Manu. He was arrested in connection with an attempt to murder case last year. Joy's wife approached Manu for legal advise. Once Joy got out on bail, his wife told him that Manu had blackmailed her and raped her.In November, Joy met with Manu along with the latter's wife and sister. Joy video recorded the interaction in which he can be heard berating Manu and telling Manu that he ought to be ashamed of himself. Joy can also be heard telling Manu that he should take his own life.Two weeks ago, the video reached legal circles and a police complaint was expected to be filed soon. A few days later, Manu was found dead at his residence in Kollam.According to the police, Joy had been blackmailing Manu for several months and had also roped in certain media persons to put pressure on the lawyer..Earlier, in 2023, Manu was accused of having raped another woman who approached him for legal advice.Based on a complaint moved by the woman, the police registered a first information report (FIR) against Manu for rape and other offences punishable under the Information Technology Act (IT Act).She alleged that Manu called her to his office and raped her. She further alleged that Manu also distributed private pictures of hers.Following reports of the registration of the FIR, Manu had resigned as a senior government pleader.After unsuccessful attempts at getting anticipatory bail from the Kerala High Court and the Supreme Court, in January 2023, Manu was arrested and remanded to judicial custody. He was finally released on bail in March 2023.On of the conditions imposed on him by the Kerala High Court while granting him bail was that he would not commit or be involved in any criminal offences while out on bail.Had an FIR been registered in the new rape case, Manu may have found himself behind bars for violating this bail condition.
