Supreme Court directs for refund of security money to Karti Chidambaram

The Supreme Court today directed that the amount of ₹20 crore which Congress MP Karti Chidambaram had deposited before travelling overseas be returned to him..Karti Chidambaram, who is an accused in INX Media and Aircel Maxis cases, was required by the Apex Court to deposit a sum of ₹10 crores on two occasions, when he had sought permission to travel overseas..These monies were deposited by the Congress leader with the Supreme Court Registry as security. He later sought a refund of the same, on his return from those trips..The Court today directed for this amount to be refunded to Karti Chidambaram..In May last year, the Supreme Court had dismissed the plea filed by Chidambaram for release of the security amount. A Bench headed by then Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi had told the counsel appearing for Chidambaram,“Pay attention to your constituency.“.On two occasions earlier, he had sought permission from the Supreme Court to travel abroad..The first order in this regard came in January, when Karti sought permission to travel abroad in the months of February and March.
