1. Digvijaya Singh v. State of M.P. & Others

The petition pertaining to Vyapam scam. Pursuant to the Court’s order, the CBI is in the process of taking over the investigation of all cases related to the scam. During the last hearing, the Court had given the CBI three weeks time to take over all cases related to the scam and to complete appointment of public prosecutors to conduct its cases before the trial courts.

Today in court: The Court was not pleased when Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar informed the Bench that the process of CBI taking over cases and appointment of public prosecutors is not complete. He submitted that the CBI is yet to take over the investigation in 72 cases and only 19 out of the 48 requisite prosecutors have been appointed.

The Court has now given CBI another three weeks time to complete the process. The CBI has also been directed to file a status report on the next hearing date which is October 9.

2. Harsh Mander v. Union of India & Ors.

This is a petition seeking a court-monitored investigation into the allegations made by Special Public Prosecutor for National Investigating Agency, that she was asked to go “soft” on certain accused in the 2008 Malegaon blasts case.

When the matter was listed for hearing last week, Justice Lalit had recused from the case citing conflict of interest.

Today in court: The Court issued notice to the Centre, Maharashtra government and the National Investigating Agency and directed them to file their response within one week. The court, however, turned down the interim prayer of the petitioners to stay the proceedings in the bail applications of the accused.

3. N Mohan v. The District Judge, Tiruvannamalai District & Ors.

4. Star India Pvt Ltd v. Akuate Internet Services Pvt Ltd & Ors.

This is a part heard appeal filed by STAR India against a Delhi HC judgment that had precluded STAR and BCCI from asserting any exclusive rights over cricket and match information. The court held that STAR could not resort to the narrow confines of “hot news doctrine” with respect to match information. STAR had then come in appeal to the Supreme Court contending that they have ‘property rights’ over cricket match information against competitors who were commercially exploiting such match information by disseminating it through SMS alerts, for a fee.
