International Technology Law Association (iTechLaw), a global non-profit for lawyers focused on technology and law, has elected Trilegal Bengaluru partner, advocate Nikhil Narendran, as its President.

He was elected by the association and took charge during the association’s World Technology Law Conference recently held at Chicago.

iTechLaw, founded in 1971 and headquartered in the United States, is one of the largest global associations dedicated to technology law. It aims to bring together legal practitioners, in-house counsel and policymakers from across jurisdictions to exchange knowledge, develop thought leadership and engage with legal challenges arising from rapid technological advancement.

Narendran is a 2007 graduate of Kochi's National University of Advanced Legal Studies (NUALS).

He has been associated with iTechLaw for over a decade and has served in several leadership positions within the organisation, including as Vice-President, Treasurer and Secretary.

At Trilegal, Narendran is part of the firm’s technology, media and telecommunications (TMT) practice and leads its Digital Innovation Group. His work focuses on advising companies on telecom, media and technology laws in relation to India entry, operations, strategy, regulatory issues, disputes and business models.

His areas of practice include data protection, artificial intelligence, telecom and satellite regulation, cybersecurity, content liability and intellectual property.

He regularly advises e-commerce, fintech and technology companies on regulatory frameworks and business structuring, including issues relating to data. His telecom regulatory work spans mobile telephony, enterprise services, satellite communications, cloud and call centre operations.

He was awarded the iTechLaw Travelling Fellowship in 2011, under which he worked with multiple European law firms specialising in technology law.

Within iTechLaw, Narendran has played an active role in shaping discussions around emerging technologies and legal frameworks.

He was a lead author of the accountability chapter in iTechLaw’s Responsible AI publication released in 2019, which set out principles and approaches for the responsible development and deployment of artificial intelligence technologies across jurisdictions.

Narendran has also been involved in significant litigation and advisory matters before Indian courts, including cases involving the Wikimedia Foundation and proceedings linked to the personality rights of Congress leader Shashi Tharoor.
