[BREAKING] Tripura Municipal polls: CPI(M) moves Supreme Court alleging BJP terrorizing opposition

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) one of the opposition parties in fray for the upcoming Tripura Municipal polls, has moved Supreme Court alleging attack on their party workers by ruling BJP. .CPI(M) has sought to intervene in the writ petition filed earlier by All India Trinamool Congress before the top court making similar allegations.The CPI(M) in its plea said that their workers and sympathisers are being threatened against exercising their franchise for the polls which are slated to be held on Thursday."They are not permitted to move out of their home for exercising their franchise. They are terrorised and restrained. Their lives are in danger. Peaceful, free and fair election will not be materialised," the plea said..The intervention application drawn by advocate Subhash Chandran KR and filed through advocate Biju P Raman said that an emergent situation has arisen in the State warranting intervention by the top court. "Information has been pouring from different poll bound ULBs and several wards of Agartala Municipal Council that large number of miscreants are intruding into those areas at the behest of ruling BJP and indulging into terrorizing the opposition supporters with dire consequences, with the threat not to move to the polling stations tomorrow on 25th November, 2021," it was submitted..The plea said that at around 4.00 pm on Wednesday, a group of 15-20 such miscreants barged into the house of Smriti Sarker, the CPI(M) candidate for Agartala Municipal Corporation and threatened her by openly demonstrating their firearms..If violence, threats and intimidation are not stopped with iron hands, then on November 25 opposition party members, activists including CPI(M) workers and sympathisers and voters will not be able to exercise their franchise freely, it was contended..Earlier, a Bench of Justices DY Chandrachud and Vikram Nath had in the case filed by TMC, taken a serious note of the various incidents of political violence in the run up to the municipal polls in the State, and issued a slew of directions to the State and Police authorities."Postponing elections is a matter of last and extreme recourse. We consider that instead of postponing elections, the apprehensions can be redressed by issuing pre-emptory directions to Tripura to ensure that remaining phases of municipal elections take place in fair manner," the Court had stated in its order passed on November 23..The Bench had called upon the State to submit tabulated data on the complaints made, steps taken on the same and whether FIRs have been registered.The Bench had also asked the State to give details of security arrangements in place for polling and counting of votes..The case will be heard again on Thursday as the State goes to polls.
