The Delhi High Court recently stated that weekly markets in Delhi localities cannot pose safety and security nightmare for residents and must be regulated by the authorities..A Division Bench of Justices Prathiba Singh and Madhu Jain made this observation while hearing a petition filed by a resident from Uttam Nagar seeking removal of the weekly Monday market in the area.“Weekly bazars cannot be converted into a safety and security nightmare for residents. The same ought to be regulated both in terms of number of vendors and the space occupied by them,” the Court stated in the order passed on April 30.Hence, the Court sought the response of Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and other local authorities on the petition..The petitioner, Ved Prakash, complained of extensive encroachment by the vendors during the weekly market on Mondays.He submitted certain photographs of the area to substantiate his claims.The Court observed the photographs proved that there was “stark” difference in the area on days when the market operated when compared to normal days. The counsel representing the MCD submitted that the Delhi government envisaging a plan to regulate the encroachment caused by the weekly market vendors.The Court then directed MCD to submit a report regarding the plan to tackle the situation.
