

DM Harish School of Law, HSNC University, Mumbai will be organizing a Faculty Professional Development Programme (FPDP) titled “Deconstructing & Deciphering the New Criminal Laws” from January 19-23, 2026 at the University campus in Worli.
The five-day programme is designed for faculty members and research scholars and will offer an interdisciplinary examination of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (BNSS) and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023 (BSA) legislations that mark a decisive shift away from colonial-era criminal statutes.
Organised under the leadership of Provost, HSNC University, Anil Harish and Vice-Chancellor, HSNC University, Col Dr Hemlata K Bagla, the FPDP reflects the University’s continued commitment to academic excellence, legal scholarship and socially responsive education.
Dean, Faculty of Interdisciplinary Studies, Dr Leena Pujari is the FPDP advisor, Director, DM Harish School of Law, Prof (Dr) Bindu Variath, is the Convenor and Associate Professor & Head of Department, Dr Anju Singh, is the Co-Convenor.
Dr Hemlata K Bagla noted that more than a year after the operationalisation of the new criminal codes, it is timely and necessary to critically reflect on their implementation, interpretation and impact. The FPDP seeks to foster nuanced academic discourse on evolving concepts of crime, procedure, evidence and punishment, while examining how these laws reshape justice delivery, institutional coordination and public confidence in the legal system.
The programme places special emphasis on
human rights protections,
fair trial guarantees,
custodial justice,
rehabilitation and public order,
digital evidence,
forensic science,
cybercrime,
technology-enabled investigations.
crimes against women,
highlighting provisions under Chapter V of the BNS 2023,
stringent penalties,
zero FIRs, and
expedited forensic timelines.
Eminent experts from the criminal law domain are expected to conduct the sessions. The FPDP spans five days, with four sessions each day.
Day 1: Structural reforms and technological changes under the new criminal procedure framework
Day 2: Investigations and evidentiary standards, including forensic and electronic evidence;
Day 3: Trial processes, vulnerabilities and juvenile justice;
Day 4: Cybercrimes and white-collar offences in the digital age
Day 5: Implementation challenges and administrative realities of the new criminal codes.
The FPDP aims equips faculty with effective pedagogical tools through collaborative inquiry.

Strengthening interdisciplinary research and pedagogical innovation.

The FPDP is open to faculty members and research scholars, with certificates awarded upon 100% attendance.
