Students of National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam (NLUJAA) launched a peaceful protest on campus on Monday at 8:30 AM, raising concerns about recent administrative decisions and the University's stance on placements and internships.
The immediate trigger for the protest was the newly introduced minimum threshold requirement for electives.
With batch sizes ranging between 55-60 students, students argued that they should be allowed to choose elective subjects freely rather than be forced into alternatives because the intake for their preferred subject has been reached.
Another major concern of the students is the lack of institutional support for internships and placements. The students claim that they do not have a Day Zero in place although a budget of ₹70 lakh has been allotted for internships and placements. They complain that there has been no placement liaison officer appointed for the same.
The students also allege that the administration frequently deviates from the academic calendar, reducing the time available for internships.
The protest is a result of a week-long attempt by students to discuss the elective thresholds with the Vice-Chancellor, who directed them to seek approval from the faculty, only for the faculty to direct them back to the Vice-Chancellor.
After several hours of protest, Vice-Chancellor Prof (Dr) KVS Sarma met with the students in an open house that was attended by the Registrar, Academic Registrar and faculty.
The administration accepted the students' demands to choose electives freely rather than being limited by intake caps.
Students have given the administration two weeks' time to provide transparency regarding the internship and placement budget allocation. The protest has been put on hold in the meanwhile.
