Sthyr Energy, a deeptech spin-out from IIT Madras founded by Gunjan Kapadia, Akhil Kongara, and Muhammed Hamdan, has designed an innovative mechanically rechargeable zinc‑air battery system for long-duration and seasonal energy storage.

The company is developing mechanically rechargeable zinc-air battery systems designed for long-duration and seasonal energy storage. Unlike conventional lithium-ion batteries, Sthyr’s solution is based on non-flammable, water-based electrolytes, and enables modular scaling by decoupling energy and power components—allowing for over 100 hours of backup. The startup aims to pilot a 300 kWh system and eventually serve grid operators, renewable energy farms, remote microgrids, and defence sectors
