The Bar Council of Delhi (BCD) has issued a warning to lawyers who are violating professional ethics by promoting themselves on social media and digital platforms.

BCD said that it has observed a surge in lawyers posting promotional content, interviews and even their photographs to be published in connection with the cases.

The Council also noted that there has been a rapid growth of legal influencers who do not even possess appropriate credentials but engage in spreading misinformation on critical legal issues.

This amounts to unethical canvassing and violate Rule 36 of the Bar Council of India Rules, the BCD said.

"Any violation of the aforesaid Rule amounts to serious misconduct and an Advocate can be held guilty to be proceeded against under section 35 of the Advocates Act, which can lead to suspension or cancellation of licence to practice as an Advocate," the notice dated August 4 warned.

Therefore, it ordered advocates to delete all such contents from their social media accounts.

"It is therefore, directed that all such advocates who are active on social media in this regard as mentioned above may remove their contents or otherwise action shall be initiated on individual cases under section 35 of the Advocates Act, 1961," the notice said.
