Centre has notified the appointment ofJustice Ajay Kumar Mittal as the Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court.
Justice Mittal who is a Judge at the Punjab and Haryana High Court will take over as the Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court from May 28, the notification dated May 22 says.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Ajay Kumar Mittal, Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, to be the Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court with effect from 28th May, 2019.”
Justice Mittal was recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium to be elevated as the Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court in a resolution dated April 8, 2019.
Justice Mittal obtained his law degree from Delhi University in 1980. After enrolling as an advocate that same year, he practiced in the areas of Constitutional law, service law, company law and tax law. He was elevated as a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court in January 2004. Between May and June 2018, he also served as the Acting Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
Justice Mittal will takeover as the Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court following the retirement of the present Chief Justice, Justice Mohammad Yaqoob Mir.
