No proposal to establish Gujarat High Court bench at Surat: Centre to Rajya Sabha

The Gujarat High Court, whose principal seat is at Ahmedabad, currently does not have any additional bench.

The Central government on Thursday informed the Rajya Sabha that there is currently no proposal pending before it for the establishment of a bench of the Gujarat High Court at Surat.

Responding to a question by BJP MP Govindbhai Laljibhai Dholakia, Minister of State for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal said,

At present there is no complete proposal pending with the Government of India to establish a High Court Bench in Surat."

The Minister clarified that High Court benches are established in accordance with the recommendations of the Jaswant Singh Commission. Such a proposal must be complete in all respects and include the consent of the Governor, the recommendation of the Chief Justice of the concerned High Court and an assurance from the State government to provide the necessary expenditure and infrastructural facilities
