The Supreme Court on Thursday stayed the ongoing investigation against Delhi-based advocate Vikram Singh, who had been arrested by the Special Task Force (STF) of the Gurugram Police in connection with a murder case.

The Court also upheld Singh's prior interim bail, which permitted him to stay out of custody while the legal proceedings were ongoing.

In his plea, Singh claimed his arrest was “illegal” and retaliatory, arising from his representation of clients and his efforts to highlight custodial misconduct.

He alleged that the arrest was made without written grounds or independent witnesses, raising concerns about violation of his rights under Articles 21 and 22 of the Constitution.

On Wednesday, Senior Advocate Vikas Singh, who appeared for the accused-lawyer, argued that he was tortured in police custody.

The Court today stayed the probe and also made his interim bail absolute.
