Lohagad Fort murder: Accused Siya Goyal, Chetan Chaudhary remanded to seven-day police custody

The two have been accused of murdering Pune-based Ketan Agarwal, who was set to marry Goyal later this year.

A magistrate court near Pune on Tuesday remanded Siya Goyal, who stands accused of murdering her fiancée 26-year-old Ketan Agarwal, to seven days of police custody along with her alleged partner, Chetan Chaudhary.

The judicial magistrate at Wadgaon Mawal region near Pune passed the remand order on June 23 after the local police produced Goyal and Chaudhary seeking their custody for further investigation. 

The case concerns the death of Ketan Agarwal near the Lohagad Fort, near Lonavla in Maharashtra. The case was initially registered as an accidental fall but later converted into a murder case.

The police state that on June 18, Agarwal died after falling into the 350-feet deep valley during a trek to Lohagad with Goyal and other friends.

Goyal was to marry him later this year.

Five days after the death, the police stated that Agarwal was killed by his fiancée, Siya Goyal, and her friend, Chaudhary.

The police have invoked provisions punishing murder and criminal conspiracy under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita in the case.

Goyal and Chaudhary were arrested on June 23 and producted before the magistrate court for remand.

Advocate Ram Shahane, appearing for Chaudhary, pointed out that the case was first treated as an accidental death and that only after about ten days did the police add the offence of murder and conspiracy. He argued that the arrest was on the basis of suspicion. 

The prosecution led by Superintendent of Pune Rural Sandeep Gill submitted that the investigation was at a nascent stage. Hence, no substantive evidence has been placed before the court yet.

After hearing rival submissions, the court ordered the remand of both accused for seven days to the custody of the police. The accused will remain in police custody till June 29.
