The Maharashtra State cabinet has approved a budget of ₹3,750 crore for the construction of the new Bombay High Court complex in Bandra East.

A decision taken by the cabinet states that the new complex will be built on around 30.16 acres of land.

According to reports, the complex will house 75 modern courtrooms, judges’ chambers, offices, staff facilities, an arbitration and mediation centre, a library, an auditorium, residential quarters and extensive parking.

The cabinet has also declared it a major infrastructure project and said that the construction will be completed on time.

The principal seat of the Bombay High Court is currently functioning from the iconic building constructed in 1878. It was designed to house just 15 judges, but today it has 29 courtrooms and a sanctioned strength of 94 judges.

Lawyers and litigants have long complained that the Bombay High Court’s Gothic building is bursting at the seams and that the overcrowded corridors, cramped courtrooms and inadequate storage hinder its smooth functioning.
