Justice Rajendra Menon assumed charge as the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court today after he was sworn in by Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal in a ceremony held at Raj Niwas, New Delhi.

The oath ceremony was attended by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, Delhi Assembly Speaker Ram Niwas Goel as well as several Cabinet Ministers.

Centre notified the transfer of Justice Menon from the Patna High Court to Delhi High Court on August 3, after a recommendation was made by the Supreme Court collegium on July 16.

The official notification stated that Justice Menon would take charge on or before August 17.

Justice Menon was elevated as Chief Justice of Patna High Court in March 2017, after being posted at the Principal Bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court since 2008.

He was elevated to the Gwalior Bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court as an Additional Judge on April 1, 2002.

Before recommending Justice Menon for the post of Chief Justice of Delhi High court, on January 10, the Supreme Court Collegium had suggested the name of Justice Aniruddha Bose, Judge, Calcutta High Court.

The recommendation was, however, sent back by the Law Ministry on the ground that Justice Bose lacked the experience as a chief justice to handle such a “prominent” high court.
