Bar & Bench

The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the appointment of Madras High Court judge Justice M Sundar as Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court.

Justice Sundar is presently the second senior-most judge of the Madras High Court.

If appointed, he will continue a long tradition of judges from the Madras High Court leading the Manipur High Court. In the past, Justices Ramalingam Sudhakar, MV Muralidharan, and D Krishna Kumar - all originally from the Madras High Court - have served as Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court.

Born on July 19, 1966 in Chennai, Justice Sundar graduated in law from Madras Law College as part of the institution’s first five-year integrated law course. He enrolled as an advocate in 1989 and primarily practiced before the Madras High Court, handling a wide range of civil matters. He was elevated as a permanent judge of the Madras High Court on October 5, 2016.
