The Supreme Court today extended the date for receipt of claims of those individuals who were not included in the draft National Register of Citizens (NRC).

The State coordinator of NRC Pratik Hajela recommended today that out of the 15 documents enumerated in List A of the report, only 10 will be accepted as valid documents to prove and establish legacy.

The Court accepted this recommendation and extended the date of receipt of such claims.

“This should be sufficient for the Union of India and other stakeholders to form their views and thereafter orders will be passed,” Justice Ranjan Gogoi stated.

Further, the Court has sought a response from the Government of India and the stakeholders in this regard within two weeks.

The centre, represented by the Attorney General KK Venugopal submitted that the Government of India is interested in the full report. Therefore, he sought for a copy of the record prepared by the State Coordinator, which details the modalities concerning claims for inclusion in NRC. The Court, however, declined this request.

“The Government may be interested, Mr Attorney, but we have to balance things. This is all we can do at this point,” Justice Gogoi stated.

The NRC case is being heard by a Bench of Justices Ranjan Gogoi and Rohinton Nariman. The Court will hear the matter next on September 19.
