The Supreme Court on Monday refused to entertain a plea by Waris-de-Punjab chief and MP Amritpal Singh challenging the extension of his detention under the National Security Act (NSA) [Amritpal Singh vs. Union of India & Ors.].

A Bench of Justices Aravind Kumar and NV Anjaria asked Singh to approach the Punjab and Haryana High Court in the matter.

The top court added that the High Court should decide on his plea expeditiously, within 6 weeks.

Singh has been under detention in Assam under the NSA since 2023. He was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Khadoor Sahib constituency a year later.

Reportedly, his detention has been extended for the third time, with the latest extension linked to an investigation into the October 2024 murder of YouTuber Gurpreet Singh Harinau in Faridkot.

A Special Investigation Team has reportedly named Singh, along with Canada-based Khalistani operative Arshdeep Singh Gill alias Arsh Dalla, in connection with the case.

While the NSA detention has been lifted for nine of his detained associates after nearly two years, it continues to remain in force solely against Amritpal Singh, who is presently lodged in Dibrugarh Jail in Assam.
