The Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed a public interest litigation (PIL) petition which highlighted the dangers of overcrowding of passenger buses, both public and private [Sangam Lal Pandey vs. Union of India & Ors.].

The plea alleged that millions of lives are lost every year due to unchecked overloading of buses by transport departments and private operators.

A bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran said that the top court should not be approached on every policy matter and asked the petitioner to file a representation before the government.

“Go and make a representation to the government. There are other organs of the Constitution which are functioning. For everything you can’t come to the Court,” CJI Gavai said.

"The matter is within the policy domain of the State. We are not inclined to interfere," the Court noted in its order while dismissing the plea.
