The Supreme Court on Thursday stayed the conviction and life sentence of Amit Jogi, son of former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Ajit Jogi, in a 23-year-old murder case.
A Bench of Justices Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta and Vijay Bishnoi passed the stay order on an appeal filed by Jogi against an order of the Chhattisgarh High Court which had overturned his acquittal by trial court.
The case relates to the 2003 murder of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ramavatar Jaggi.
Jaggi, a close associate of former Union Minister Vidya Charan Shukla, was shot dead in Raipur on June 4, 2003. It was alleged that the murder as a result of political conspiracy.
The matter was investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
A special CBI court acquitted Jogi in 2007 while convicting many others.
Jaggi's son then filed an appeal against acquittal before the High Court.
A Bench of Chief Justice Ramesh Sinha and Justice Arvind Kumar Verma of High Court overturned the trial court verdict earlier this month and found Jogi guilty of murder and criminal conspiracy.
The Court then sentenced him to life imprisonment.
