The  Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) on Tuesday nominated former Supreme Court Justice B Sudershan Reddy as its candidate for the Vice President of India.

He will contest the polls against ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate CP Radhakrishnan.

Announcing the decision, Congress President and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, said that the Vice Presidential contest is an ideological battle and Reddy is one of India’s most distinguished and progressive jurists.

"He has been a consistent and courageous champion of social, economic and political justice. He reflects, fully, the values that shaped our country’s Freedom Movement so profoundly, and the values on which our country’s Constitution and Democracy have been anchored. All these values are under assault and therefore, our collective and determined resolve to fight this election," Kharge added.

The vice presidential elections are scheduled for September 9.

The elections have been necessitated by the resignation of ex- Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar on July 21, 2025.

Who is Justice B Sudershan Reddy?

Justice Reddy was born on July 8, 1946 and earned his LLB degree from Osmania University in 1971. The same year, he enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Andhra Pradesh.

He practiced in writ and civil matters before the High Court of Andhra Pradesh.

He worked as a Government Pleader in the High Court during 1988-90 and as Additional Standing Counsel for the Central Government for 6 months during 1990. Reddy also worked as a legal adviser and Standing Counsel for Osmania University.

He was appointed as a permanent Judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court on May 2, 1995, Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court on December 5, 2005.

He was elevated to the Supreme Court of India in January 2007. He retired from office on July 8, 2011.
