Chambers of K Sumathi, Advocate, High Court of Madras is looking to hire Junior Litigation Associates and Interns in Chennai.

K Sumathi is an Advocate with more than three decades of pioneering practice, specializing in gender justice, child laws, matrimonial laws, and civil and criminal laws. She is also an acclaimed author, writer, and orator.  

Positions: Junior Associates and Interns - 4 (four) positions each

PQE: 0-2 Years

Location: Chennai, Tamil Nadu

Nature of work

  • The office offers a dynamic and inclusive work environment that is not only conducive to continuous learning but also provides exceptional support, particularly for first-generation lawyers.

  • The regular work schedule would include drafting, legal research, client consultations, attending court hearings, and undertaking registry work.

Eligibility criteria

Junior Associate

The ideal candidate for this position would possess the following qualifications and qualities:

  • 0-2 years of post-qualification work experience in litigation with a focus on civil, criminal, and matrimonial disputes. Any relevant internship experience will also be considered.

  • Enrolment with any State Bar Council.  

  • The ability to effectively undertake registry work, including but not limited to filing cases, complying with queries, obtaining certified copies and other documents, and maintaining case records.

Intern

  • Completed either 2nd year of a 5-year/ 1st year of a 3-year law program.

  • Be based in Chennai for the entire duration of the internship. The office is currently not offering online internships.

  • Ability and willingness to dedicate at least 25 hours a week for a minimum of 4 weeks.

Common Criteria

  • Excellent legal research, writing, and drafting skills.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, and effective organizational skills.

  • Attention to detail, interest and passion to learn, and a solid commitment to delivering quality work.

  • Advanced or intermediate working knowledge of Microsoft Word.

  • Speaking and writing fluency in English. Basic speaking proficiency in Tamil. Reading and writing proficiency in Tamil is an additional asset.

Remuneration

Junior Associates: Pay commensurate with knowledge and experience.

Interns: Stipend of ₹5,000 per month.
