Breaking: Allahabad HC’s #AarushiVerdict acquits Rajesh and Nupur Talwar

The Allahabad High Court today acquitted Rajesh and Nupur Talwar of the alleged murder of their daughter, Aarushi Talwar, according to various news reports..The judgment was delivered by a Bench of Justices BK Narayana and AK Mishra, which had earlier reserved its judgment on September 7 this year..Commenting on the decision of the Allahabad High Court, Niharika Karanjawala of Karanjawala & Co, said,.“The acquittal of the Talwars by the Allahabad High Court represents the triumph of the criminal justice system in a case rife with prejudice and public pressure, and brings a measure of justice to Rajesh and Nupur Talwar, grieving parents forced to undergo a long and painful period of incarceration. .We are proud to have had the opportunity to assist them in their fight for justice and grateful to the senior counsels who appeared pro bono in the Supreme Court, Mr. Mukul Rohatgi, Mr. Harish Salve, Mr. K.V. Vishwanathan and Mr. Pinaki Misra, as well as Mr. Tanvir Ahmed Mir, who represented the couple at trial.”.Aarushi Talwar was found dead in her home back in May 2008. The body of domestic help Hemraj – initially the key suspect in the case – was recovered from the terrace of the house two days later..Rajesh and Nupur were convicted in November 2013 by a CBI court at Ghaziabad for the double murder of their daughter and their domestic help, Hemraj. The couple was sentenced to life imprisonment..In the appeal in the High Court, arguments were made on the motive of the murder, and crucial pieces of evidence such as the “suspicious activity” of an internet router the night of the murder, the missing keys of Aarushi’s room, the forensic test reports and the colour of the pillowcase of Hemraj..In an earlier interview with Bar & Bench, Senior Advocate Rebecca John, who had represented the Talwars, highlighted the shoddy manner in which investigation into the case had taken place. She was quoted as saying,.“…I have seen the extreme cover-ups that have taken place in this case. Don’t ask me why they did what they did to this couple. I don’t have a shadow of doubt that these people are innocent and I mean every word of what I say. To me, this has been a witch-hunt..I have seen up close and personal how the lives of two people can be turned like this. Not because of the evidence against them but because of the sheer lack of evidence against them. It is the lack of evidence leading to their conviction that is so scary.”.Read the judgment:
