Delhi High Court's working strength rises to 50 after 7 new judges take oath

With the swearing-in of seven news judges on Monday, the Delhi High Court has received a significant boost to its working strength.

The addition of the seven judges has taken the High Court's working strength to 50 against its sanctioned strength of 60 judges. 

This could be the first time the High Court is functioning with 50 sitting judges after its sanctioned strength was raised to 60 in 2014. In 2022, the working strength of the High Court had risen to 47.

With 83% of its sanctioned strength now functioning, the High Court, which has witnessed a continuous increase in the number of commercial matters, will have more judges to handle cases and improve its disposal rate.

Chief Justice DK Upadhyaya today administered oath of office to Justices Nivedita Anil Sharma, Nisha Sahay Saxena, Sanjay Sharma, Bharat Parashar, Aditi Choudhary, Dinesh Bhatt and Arun Bhardwaj.

The High Court now has 13 women judges.

It will maintain the current strength of judges till next month, unless more judges are appointed. Four judges are slated to retire this year.

While Justice CS Sudha is set to retire on October 8, Justice Anil Kshetarpal will retire on November 18. Justices Manoj Jain and Girish Kathpalia will demit office during the last week of 2026. 

Delhi High Court has an approved strength of 45 permanent judges and 15 additional judges.
