GST- Revenue Department wants law students for a paid internship

The Revenue department is planning to induct students on an internship program to prepare the background work associated with the introduction of Goods and Services Tax (GST). The Revenue department is actively pursuing the work related to the introduction of GST in the country. The proposed GST regime is expected to subsume large number of Central taxes like Central Excise duty, Service tax, Counter Veiling duty and the State taxes and levies like VAT, Entry tax and Entertainment tax.

Speaking to Bar & Bench, Under Secretary, Arvind Kumar said, “This internship program would benefit the students to understand the biggest revolution in the post independent India’s tax regime after indirect tax reform. Some of the students have very high intellect and research capacities.These internships will also benefit the Department immensely”. The Department has allocated a stipend of Rs. 5,000 ($110) per month to encourage students to take up these internships.

Law students interested in practicing tax law may want to consider this seriously as it may boost their resume in quite a unique manner – the students can develop relationships within the Department, which will be very valuable and useful for their career.
