Justice Nitin Wasudeo Sambre appointed Acting Chief Justice of Delhi High Court

The appointment of Justice Sambre follows the elevation of Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya to the Supreme Court.

Justice Nitin Wasudeo Sambre was appointed as the Acting Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court on Monday.

The Union Ministry of Law and Justice issued a notification in this regard after Chief Justice DK Upadhyaya was elevated to the Supreme Court.

"In exercise of the power conferred by Article 223 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Nitin Wasudeo Sambre, Judge of the Delhi High Court, to perform the duties of office of the Chief Justice of that High Court with effect from the date Shri Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya relinquishes the charge of the office of Chief Justice consequent upon his elevation as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India,” the ministry said in a notification.

Justice Sambre was born on December 19, 1967 at Nagpur. He graduated in law in 1992 from University College of Law, Nagpur.

He enrolled as an advocate on August 25, 1992 and started legal career with then Senior Advocate Sharad A Bobde (former Chief Justice of India).

Justice Sambre practised before the High Court of Bombay, Nagpur and was the Secretary of the High Court Bar Association, Nagpur for 2004-07.

He was elevated as a judge of Bombay High Court on January 6, 2014. He was transferred to the Delhi High Court in July 2025.
