A Kerala court on Wednesday sentenced 8 Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) workers to life imprisonment for the 2013 murder of Communist Party of India (Marxist) worker Kattakada Ashokan. .A Sessions Court in Thiruvananthapuram had on January 10 convicted Shambhu, Sreejith, Hari, Ambili, Santhosh, Sajeev, Ashokan alias Anni and Prashanth (alias Pazhinji) for the murder..Ashokan's murder was believed to be the result of a personal rivalry between him and Shambhu, the first accused. Shambhu had allegedly lent some money to Ashokan's friend. Shambhu allegedly intimidated the friend for repayment leading to the row with Ashokan.The incident occurred on the evening of May 5, 2013 at Alamcode Junction, where Ashokan was brutally hacked and beaten to death.Nineteen persons were initially arrayed as accused in the case. Two of them turned approvers and one passed away when the trial was pending. Eight of the accused were acquitted and eight others were convicted.
