Union Minister of State for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal on Thursday said that the ministry was willing to examine a law for protection of advocates.

Meghwal also urged the legal fraternity to felicitate its “unsung heroes” who contributed to public welfare without expecting anything in return.

“Can we identify 100 such lawyers who don’t feature in the pages of the history books and felicitate them? You’ll find many of them. Perhaps you’ll find their families. Let’s find them and felicitate them,” he said.

The Minister of State was speaking at a felicitation ceremony organised for him by the Bar Council of India (BCI). He said during his speech,

“With the responsibility of the Law Ministry entrusted upon me, I will listen to your grievances."

He also urged members of the Bar to organise a workshop in honour of Dr BR Ambedkar. He pointed out that 2023 marks a century since Ambedkar, who was the architect of the Indian Constitution, was called to the Bar in 1923.

The Ministry of Culture, of which Meghwal is also a Minister of State, would extend its cooperation towards conducting such a workshop if the BCI takes the initiative, he added.

During the function, BCI Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra highlighted issues related to infrastructure and welfare of lawyers, among others.

Responding to concerns raised by Mishra and others at the event, Meghwal said that the Law Ministry also would look into the issue of the dearth of chambers, especially for lawyers practising in the district courts.

Members of bar associations from 20 states attended the ceremony.
