The Supreme Court on Friday sought the response of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to British national Christina Michel's plea for bail in the AgustaWestland chopper scam case [Christian James Michel vs Central Bureau of Investigation]..A Bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Prasanna B Varale asked the CBI to respond to Michel's plea within four weeks..Michel was extradited to India in December 2018 and has been in custody since then The Delhi High Court on September 25 had denied his plea for bail, leading to the present appeal, filed through advocate Aljo K Joseph.Earlier, a trial court in Delhi had rejected a similar plea by Michel seeking release from custody..Michel is accused of having entered into as many as twelve contracts with AgustaWestland to legitimize the illicit commission/kickbacks amounting to 42.27 million Euro received on the procurement of VVIP helicopters by the Government of India.The CBI had estimated the amount of bribes at US$33 million, transferred through bank accounts in the UK and UAE.Advocates Aljo Joseph, Sriram Parakkat and MS Vishnu Shankar appeared for Michel.The Supreme Court had rejected his bail plea in February 2023 and in March this year.
