Centre clears appointment of Justice Mahesh Chandra Tripathi as Chief Justice of Bombay High Court

The Central government on Saturday cleared the appointment of Allahabad High Court Justice Mahesh Chandra Tripathi as the new Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court.

Justice Tripathi will be the 50th Chief Justice of the High Court and the second Chief Justice from Allahabad High Court.

The recommendation for his appointment as the Chief Justice was made by the Supreme Court Collegium at a meeting held on August 6.

Justice Tripathi graduated in law from Lucknow University in 1990. He enrolled as an advocate on January 11, 1992.

His practice was mainly on the civil side. He served as the additional chief standing counsel for the State of Uttar Pradesh since October 2007.

He also appeared as counsel for the Kanpur Development Authority, Kanpur Nagar Nigam, UP Food and Essential Commodities Corporation, Agra Development Authority, Moradabad Development Authority and Kumaun University.

Justice Tripathi was elevated as an additional judge of the Allahabad High Court on September 27, 2013. He was made a permanent judge on April 10, 2015.

Bombay High Court is currently functioning with 74 judges as against its sanctioned strength of 94 judges.
