The Delhi High Court today granted anticipatory bail to Dr Zafarul Islam Khan, former Chairperson of the Delhi Minorities Commission, in connection with the sedition FIR lodged against him.

In case of arrest, Dr Zafarul Islam Khan is to be released on bail subject to furnishing a personal bond of Rs 50,000 and one surety of the like amount.

The order was passed by a Single Judge Bench of Justice Manoj Kuma Ohri after the Delhi Police stated that Khan was no longer required for further investigation.

The Court was informed that Khan has already submitted his laptop to the investigating agency and, on two occasions, appeared before the Police for investigation.

In view of Delhi Police's stand, Khan was granted anticipatory bail.

The Court has directed Khan to continue cooperating with the investigation.

An FIR was lodged against Khan for commission of offences of sedition and promoting religious enmity in connection with his remarks highlighting the targeting of Muslims by “bigots” in India during COVID-19. In his post on social media, Khan had also expressed his thanks to Kuwait for expressing international concern on the issue faced by the Muslim minority in India.

While arguing for anticipatory bail, Khan had alleged that the FIR was mala fide, misconceived and that it is based on a misrepresentation of facts and an untenable reading of the law.

Khan was represented by Advocate Vrinda Grover. APP MP Singh appeared for Delhi Police.
