[BREAKING] Delhi High Court stays trial in INX Media case

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday stayed further trial court proceedings in the INX Media money laundering case being probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), in which former Union Minister P Chidambaram and his son Karti Chidambaram are accused. .The stay was granted by Justice Suresh Kumar Kait in CBI's plea against Special CBI Judge's order directing supply of all documents to accused persons. .The Court also issued notice in the plea and sought response from all respondents i.e. accused persons in the INX media case..Advocate Anupam S Sharma, appearing for CBI, argued that the trial court wrongly directed supply of "all documents" to accused persons at the stage of Section 207 CrPC. .Sharma contended that the accused persons are entitled only to those documents relied upon by the prosecution. .During the course of the hearing, the Court pointed out that it is settled law that the accused is entitled to bring on record, at any stage, any document for the purposes of fair trial. ."For what purpose are you keeping this (documents)?", the Court asked as it remarked that the documents were seized from the accused themselves. .Sharma informed the Court that the investigation in the case is still ongoing with respect to the "wider angle of conspiracy". .After hearing Sharma, the Court proceeded to issue notice in the plea. .Special CBI Court had taken cognizance of the CBI's chargesheet against P Chidambaram, son Karti Chidambaram and others in the INX Media case, on October 21, 2019..It is CBI’s case that Chidambaram misused his official position while granting FIPB approval to INX Media and INX News Pvt Ltd in lieu of illegal gratification..The accused persons are facing proceedings for commission of offences under sections 120-B, 420, 468, 471 IPC and Sections 9, 13 of the Prevention of Corruption Act. The CBI had registered an FIR in the case on May 15, 2017..Besides Chidambaram and Karti, the other accused in the case are Karti’s CA, S Bhaskararaman, INX Media’s Peter Mukherjea, bureaucrats Sindhushree Khullar, Ajeet Kumar Dungdung, Rabindra Prasad, Pradeep Kumar Bagga, Prabodh Saxena, Anup K Pujari, INX Media Pvt Ltd, INX News Pvt Ltd, Chess Management Services Pvt Ltd and Advantage Strategic Consulting Pvt Ltd.
