Supreme Court judges are often responsible for increasing the docket burden on the top court, a Bench of Justices DY Chandrachud and MR Shah remarked on Thursday. .The Court was hearing a special leave petition against an eviction order when Justice Chandrachud said that such petitions often lead to contempt pleas initiated by the apex court on non fulfillment of undertaking which then increase the workload on the Court. ."These contempt petitions which we initiate when undertakings are not met is increasing our burden," he said. .Justice Shah, who was sharing the Bench with him, agreed."I feel at times we judges are only responsible for increasing the burden of Supreme Court," he weighed in. .The case in question was about eviction of a tenant as his lease deed for 11 months expired in 2003.Advocate Balaji Srinivasan appeared for the tenant, Mangalchand..The Supreme Court has a pendency of 66,072 cases as on February 1, 2021. Out of these, 47,136 are admission matters while 18,936 are regular hearing cases. .There are 443 Constitution Bench cases pending before the top court. Out of those 47 are main cases, while the remaining 396 are connected petitions.
