The Madras High Court recently granted bail to four murder accused college students subject to them serving at the trauma ward of local government hospitals as condition for release on bail..The Court also directed all accused persons to submit a hand written note on their respective experience at the hospital.The order passed by Justice AD Jagadish Chandira on December 2. The Court granted bail to Chandru, Eswar, Yuvaraj and Eswaran, all students pursuing their undergraduate degrees at Pachayappa's College in Chennai.The judge also directed them to execute a bond of ₹15,000 each..Two of the accused were directed to serve at the trauma ward at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in the city every day between 10 am and 2 pm until December 19 this year.The Court directed the other two accused students to serve at the trauma ward of the Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital in Chennai for the same period.“The petitioners shall appear before this Court on 20.12.2024 along with Reports of the RMO concerned in this regard; each petitioner shall, in his own handwriting, submit before this Court a write-up of his experience in the trauma ward during the above period,” the High Court said..The accused were arrested by the police on October 4 on the charges of attempt to murder after they had allegedly attacked a student of Presidency College in Chennai. The victim later succumbed to his injuries at a hospital and the police subsequently booked the accused for murder.While the accused claimed they had been falsely implicated in the matter, the police said the accused had assaulted the victim in a case of rivalry between student groups.The High Court took note of the prosecution’s submissions and expressed its concern over recurring incidents of student groups attacking each other..During the previous hearing, the Court had suo motu impleaded the Secretary, State Higher Education department and the principals of the two colleges where the accused and the victim were studying.The Students Federation of India (SFI) and an NGO, Sattha Panchayat Iyakkam, had also filed intervening petitions and sought the Court’s permission to submit their proposals to work out a solution to curb such incidents of violence.The High Court will hear the matter further on December 20..Advocates P Muthamizhselvakumar, S Mohan Raj and D Dhanasekar appeared for the accused students.Government Advocate Leonard Arul Joseph Selvam appeared for the State..[Read Order]
