Madras High Court restrains illegal broadcast, streaming of Dhurandhar 2

The Madras High Court on Wednesday passed an ad interim injunction restraining internet service providers and cable TV operators from unlawfully broadcasting the movie Dhurandhar: The Revenge (Dhurandhar 2) ahead of its scheduled release on March 19 [Reliance Industries Limited Vs BSNL].

Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy passed the order on applications filed by producer of the movie Reliance Industries Limited and its media division Jio Studios seeking urgent protection against apprehended copyright infringement.

Dhurandhar: The Revenge is an upcoming Hindi-language spy action thriller directed by Aditya Dhar. The film stars Ranveer Singh in the lead as an undercover operative navigating the criminal and political underworld, alongside actors such as Sanjay Dutt, R Madhavan and Arjun Rampal. It is a a sequel to the 2025 blockbuster Dhurandhar.

The commercial suit filed by Reliance alleged that various intermediaries, including ISPs and cable operators, may illegally transmit or stream the film without authorisation.

They also produced the Central Board of Film Certification's certificate showing them as the producer of the film.

The Court noted that the movie is slated for release on March 19, 2026.

The Court observed that in such cases, irreparable injury is likely to be caused if interim protection is not granted, particularly given the imminent release of the film. At the same time, it acknowledged that the business interests of the respondents could also be impacted.

Balancing these considerations, the Court directed Reliance to indemnify the respondents for any potential loss arising from the injunction.

Subject to this condition, the Court granted an ad interim injunction restraining the respondents from broadcasting or transmitting the film unlawfully until April 15.

The Court also issued notice to the respondents.

The matter will next be taken up on April 15.

In late February, Reliance had withdrawn a similar commercial suit seeking wide-ranging anti-piracy directions against telecom service providers, internet service providers and cable operators in relation to Dhurandhar
