The Supreme Court is hearing a a suo motu case on safeguarding courts and ensuring protection and security of judges, registered in the wake of the death of Jharkhand Judge, Uttam Anand, who was killed by a speeding vehicle while he was out on a morning walk. .A Bench led by Chief Justice of India NV Ramana had earlier directed the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police of Jharkhand to submit a status report on investigation into the death of judge Anand within a week. .Live updates from the hearing today feature here. .Jharkhand government has filed a status report in Supreme Court. The state government has handed over the investigation (into the case of Dhanbad judge's death) to CBI..Senior Advocate Rajiv Ranjan, AG for Jharkhand appears.CJI: Mr Attorney General we sought your assistance regarding attack on judges of trial courts and high courts.AG Jharkhand: The incident is of July 28 and it happened at 5 am when he went for morning walk .CJI: We know we read newspapers that's not the issue.Rajiv Ranjan: We formed a 22 members SIT and we apprehended the driver of the vehicle and we also took a decision to hand over the case to CBI. They have taken it over and we already assisting .CJI: So you washed off your hands?.Ranjan: There may be cross border implications and a serious matter and thus we handed it over to CBI .CJI: We will ask CBI to appear on Moday. We have seen in other cases too...Justice Surya Kant: Mr Advocate General have you complied with para 32 regarding giving security to judges of lower judiciary .Ranjan: Yes, their societies and homes have been given security of police and protection force.CJI: An application has been filed saying anti social elements are entering courts and states some security measures need to be put in place so that judges can work independently. that appears Centre has not filed a counter in this case. Please file a counter for us to pass order.CJI: There are several cases in the country which involves gangsters and where high-profile people are accused. So judges are threatened mentally also by sending messages on whatsapp, SMS. Complaints were made, but CBI has done nothing, no change in CBI attitude. Sorry to observe!.AG Venugopal: When such cases are taken which have gangsters and high profile accused, the judges often gets calls saying that they know which car are they traveling in..CJI: New trend in this country. If an adverse order is passed then judiciary is maligned. If judges file a complaint to police or CBI they do not respond. Intelligence Bureau and CBI is not helping Judiciary at all!.CJI: Look at this unfortunate case of death of a young judge. This is State's failure This area has coal mafias and security should have been provided to the society and residences of judges..AG Venugopal: I have a list of judges who were attacked.
