[Satish Tickoo murder] Lawyer files plea for adjournment after he was allegedly denied security; J&K Police deny claim

Jammu and Kashmir court has adjourned the case in connection with Kashmiri Pandit Satish Tickoo's murder after the lawyer for Tickoo's family filed an application for adjournment alleging he was not given security by Jammu and Kashmir Police at Srinagar airport on Tuesday (Maharaj Krishan Tickoo V/s JK Union Territory Through SHO P/S Shaheed Ganj)..First Additional Sessions Judge, Srinagar Amit Gupta adjourned the matter till May 23 while continuing the previous directions passed by the Court directing petitioner to submit hard copies of the revision plea challenging dismissal order passed by the court below..The application for adjournment was filed through Delhi based Lawyer Utsav Bains in a revision plea seeking setting aside an order passed by the court below that had dismissed an application filed by Tickoo's brother Maharaj Krishan.The dismissed petition sought a proper, fair and impartial investigation into the murder allegedly committed by former JKLF terrorist Bitta Karate in 1990. Farooq Ahmad Dar alias Bitta Karate had allegedly shot dead businessman Satish Tickoo outside his residence at the Habba Kadal area of Srinagar on February 2, 1990. Karate was arrested in connection with the murder, and was released on bail after 16 years, even as he spent the time in jail without conviction..The application for adjournment said that security was not provided to Bains by the police in spite of orders passed by the Supreme Court in that regard. Utsav Bains was given security after he had filed an application before the Supreme Court in the alleged sexual harassment case against the then CJI Ranjan Gogoi. The Supreme Court which was hearing the suo motu case against the alleged sexual harassment by CJI Gogoi had later closed the case in 2021.."That as no security was provided to Advocate Sh. Utsav Bains by Jammu & Kashmir Police today in spite of orders by Hon'ble Supreme Court of India, the learned advocate has to unfortunately return back to Delhi after landing at the Srinagar Airport today at 09 am", the application said. .However, the Inspector General of Police (IG), Kashmir Vijay Kumar denied the claim and said that security was provided to Bains at Srinagar airport.."I have verified from SSP security Srinagar. Security control room sent BP vehicle, PSO (Body guard) and escort personnel to airport. Security personnel were waiting at Airport since 08 am", IG Kumar told Bar & Bench..The earlier application before a Judicial Magistrate/ Special Mobile Magistrate was dismissed for default due to the absence of parties..Subsequently, a revision petition was filed in the First Additional Sessions Court, Srinagar.Vivek Agnihotri's recently-released 'The Kashmir Files' movie features the story of the murder of Satish Tickoo, and the terror that Karate unleashed in the Valley in 1990s, bringing the case back in the news.
