All 31 Delhi High Court judges vote in favour of Saurabh Kirpal Senior designation; six women in the list

Saurabh Kirpal, whose elevation as a judge was deferred by the Supreme Court Collegium three times in the past, has garnered the votes of all 31 judges of the Delhi High Court for conferment of Senior designation. .Speaking to Bar & Bench, Kirpal said,“I’m very touched by the faith that the judges have shown in me. There’s nothing you can say about it without sounding arrogant and arrogance is not any part of what a lawyer should be...It’s not just the fact that I became a senior but the overwhelming support that the Bench has shown me when my name has been fairly controversial...They’ve shown that they’ve got my back.”.Kirpal was recommended for elevation as a judge by the Delhi High Court Collegium on October 13, 2017..Thereafter, the consideration to elevate Kirpal was deferred thrice by the Supreme Court Collegium – once on September 4, 2018, for the second time on January 16, 2019, and lastly, on April 1, 2019..Advocate Rahul Mehra garnered 30 votes from the High Court judges. .Out of the 55 advocates who have been conferred the senior gown, six are women, namely, Deepika V Marwaha, Garima Prasad, Malvika Trivedi, Neelima Tripathi, Nitya Ramakrishnan, and Suruchi Aggarwal. .[BREAKING] Delhi High Court confers Senior designation on 55 lawyers.In 2017, Sonia Mathur was the sole woman who was conferred the senior gown by the High Court. .In 2016, the Delhi High Court conferred Senior designations on twelve advocates, none of whom were women..Previously, in 2015, out of six successful advocates, the only woman who was conferred designation was Rekha Palli. She is now a sitting judge of the High Court. .Justices Prathiba M Singh and Jyoti Singh were also Senior Advocates during their days at the Bar. .This year, Senior designations were conferred in accordance with the High Court of Delhi Designation of Senior Advocate Rules, 2018.
