Security in Delhi courts: Delhi High Court issues notice in suo motu matter, calls for suggestions

The Delhi High Court today issued notice in the suo motu petition for improving security in Delhi courts, taken up in the wake of last week's Rohini Court firing incident that resulted in the death of three persons (Court on its own motion v. Commissioner of Delhi Police & Ors)..The matter was heard today by the Bench of Chief Justice DN Patel and Justice Jyoti Singh. The Court stated,"I am issuing notice today. I want suggestions from all respondents in short bullet points...Please share them inter se. All suggestions to be sent to Commissioner of Delhi Police.".The order went on to state,"Because of the incident on September 24 at district court in Rohini where firing has taken place and three lives have been lost, there is a need for effective deployment of sufficient number of police personnel, more CCTV cameras."The Court further mentioned the need for a fool-proof system of entrance to be installed at the Delhi High Court and other Delhi court complexes. It is also called for more metal detectors to be installed, an under-vehicle surveillance system (UVSS) and training for security personnel..The matter will be next heard on October 5. In the meanwhile, the Court asked the respondents to place their suggestions on affidavit in a page or two, so that an order can be passed quickly for better security in Delhi courts..The Court also made it clear that all matters filed in relation to the Rohini Court firing and security of courts in Delhi would be clubbed along with the suo motu matter, in order to avoid "multifarious litigation.".On September 24, three people including alleged gangster Jitender Gogi were reportedly killed inside a courtroom at the Rohini Court Complex premises.According to sources, the incident took place inside Courtroom number 207, where Gogi, an undertrial, was produced and two men waited under the guise of lawyers.
