The Supreme Court today issued notice in a petition seeking the implementation of a 2012 policy regarding electric vehicles.

The Bench of CJI SA Bobde with Justices BR Gavai and Surya Kant issued notice on the plea filed by Centre for Public Interest Litigation (CPIL) which sought to know the steps taken by the authorities on the effective implementation of the 2012 policy.

The 2012 policy mandates for electric vehicles to be used for public transport and for use by government departments. The policy also requires that charging stations be installed in public buildings.

Seeking to know what steps have been taken in pursuance to this policy, Advocate Prashant Bhushan, representing the organization told the Court that there was a dire need for alternative energy sources, given that fossils and coal reserves produced over millions of years were being exhausted at a rapid speed.

He also submitted that even the relatively cleaner energy like CNG were leaving a carbon footprint.

The Court agreed to issue notice on the plea and hear the matter next after four weeks.
