Professor Babu Mathew, Visiting Professor at National Law University, Delhi shall be contesting the Lok Sabha elections from Bangalore North on behalf of the Aam Aadmi Party. He shall be facing Sadanand Gowda, the former Chief Minister of Karnataka in the Lok Sabha elections that are to be held in April this year.
Speaking to Bar & Bench, Prof. Mathew said that as a trade union activist, politics was not a new field for him though this shall be his first entry into electoral politics. A part of the National Law School of India University in Bangalore since the institute’s inception, Prof. Mathew went on to found the Centre for Child and the Law.
On his choice of political party, Prof. Mathew says that one of the most significant aspect of the AAP was its ability to win the Delhi elections without the use of black money. “I think the AAP is completely different from any mainstream political party,” he says, and it was this difference that led him to join the AAP close to three months ago.
As for Bangalore North, Prof. Mathew says that through his trade union activities, he has developed a large network in that region, connections that were built upon and strengthened through his days as a law professor.
On the future of the party, Prof. Mathew says that, “I think people are fed up with the tu tu mein mein (bickering) of the mainstream parties. I am somebody who places a lot of confidence in the AAP.”
