Months after reports speculating his transfer surfaced, Justice Rajiv Shakdher will return to the Delhi High Court.

A notification issued by the Union Law Ministry today has directed that the judge assume office at the Delhi High Court on or before January 16, 2018.

The notification reads:

In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (1) of article 222 of the Constitution of India, the President, after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, is pleased to transfer Shri Justice Rajiv Shakdher, Judge of the Madras High Court, as a Judge of the Delhi High Court and to direct him to assume charge of his office in Delhi High Court on or before 16th January, 2018.

Justice Shakdher, who hails from the Delhi High Court, was transferred to Madras High Court in April 2016 causing quite a furore amongst members of the legal fraternity.

Eminent lawyers including Fali S Nariman, KK Venugopal and former Attorney General for India Soli Sorabjee had written to the Supreme Court Collegium, requesting it to reverse the transfer of Justice Shakdher.

Justice Shakdher enrolled as an advocate in November 1987, and was designated Senior Advocate in 2005. He was appointed as an additional judge of the Delhi High Court in April 2008, and as a permanent judge in October 2011. He was transferred to the Madras High Court in April 2016.
