Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal on Wednesday quit the Congress party and filed his nomination papers to the Rajya Sabha as an independent candidate from Uttar Pradesh backed by the Samajwadi Party (SP), as per media reports. .The former Congress Member of Parliament (MP) filed his nomination in the presence of Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and MP Ram Gopal Yadav, The Indian Express reported. Speaking to the media, Sibal informed that he had quit the Congress on May 16 and is filing his nomination as an independent candidate.Sibal met Akhilesh Yadav in Lucknow who accompanied him during the filing process. As per the Express report, eleven Rajya Sabha seats are headed to the polls on June 10. Sibal’s term in the Upper House is slated to end on July 4. Sibal has been representing senior SP leader Azam Khan during his multiple bail hearings in the Supreme Court. Akhilesh Yadav told ANI after the nomination, “Kapil Sibal is a senior lawyer. He has presented his opinions well in the Parliament. We hope he’ll present the opinions of both SP as well as himself.”
