The Supreme Court on Monday granted bail to hiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia in connection with a disproportionate assets case. [Bikram Singh Majithia v. State of Punjab]

A Bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta granted bail to Majithia after noting that Majithia had been granted bail earlier in a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS Act) from which the DA case arose.

"Considering the fact that the petitioner was granted bail in the earlier NDPS matter in 2022 against which the special leave petition filed by State of Punjab was dismissed in 2025, and the police report had already been filed, the fact that the disproportionate assets case relates to 2006-2017 and FIR was filed in 2025, we grant bail," the Court said.

The case, registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, dates back to 2013. A first information report (FIR) was registered based on a special task force report that was submitted before the High Court in 2018.

However, Majithia had secured bail in that matter from the High Court in 2022 and the same was upheld by the Supreme Court in 2025.

Later, a DA case was registered against him based on the NDPS case and he was arrested.

Senior Advocate S Muralidhar, appearing for Majithia, pointed out that Majithia has been behind bars for seven months and the DA case is borne out of vendetta politics.

"I’ve been behind since 7 months. In the NDPS matter they filed an additional affidavit. They’re trying to tell that they have unearthed proceeds of that crime. The same facts placed in the NDPS case has now become material for the disproportionate assets case. This is political vendetta. Everybody knows what it is," Muralidhar stated.

He also said that there is no prospect of the trial ending anytime soon since there are 295 witnesses to be examined.

Senior Advocate Siddhartha Dave, appearing for the State, said that the charges are serious and Majithia has ₹790 crores which is disproportionate

"One has to balance paap ka ghada. This is something very serious. The conduct. There are remittances of narco money," he said.

"Why do you want to keep him inside jail?" the Bench asked.

"₹790 crores is the money which is disproportionate. There are threats given. Officers who are investigating are threatened," Dave said.

"The threats were to me," Muralidhar countered.
