The Supreme Court on Monday rejected a public interest litigation (PIL) petition challenging the validity of key provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act of 1961 [Rupshi Singh v. Union of India]. .A Bench of Justice BR Gavai and K Vinod Chandran dismissed the petition, saying the petitioner can flag the issue to the parliament. The petitioner, one Rupshi Singh, challenged Sections 2, 3 and 4 of the Act.Section 2 defines dowry while Section 3 penalises giving and taking dowry.Section 4 penalises demanding dowry."The laws are invalid. I am public spirited," the petitioner told the Court. "Dismissed. Go and tell the parliament," the Bench said.
